New Toys
After trying unsuccessfully to repair my Onkyo TX-SR606 HDMI board, I decided rather than replace it, I would just route my HDMI directly to my TV and keep my audio (which was still working just fine) routed through my receiver.  This however meant that I would have to do all kinds of input switching, several remotes, and in general more frustration.  So, I decided to get a single remote that...

High Schools Are Step One Of Two →
mckaythomas: MG Siegler in his latest TechCrunch article posits that although Apple’s new iBooks strategy is admirable in its effort to fix problems in public high schools, that it’s not realistic and that their market strategy should revolve around colleges and college textbooks. Apple, by going high school first, is applying the heat to university textbook publishers and bookstores. They are...

Tumblr Staff: Downtime →
I am in the IT industry, and we experience downtimes, but every company communicates them differently.  I’ve always had the view that transparency is better. staff: Yesterday afternoon, during planned maintenance that was not intended to interrupt service, an issue arose that took down a critical database cluster. This brought down our entire network while our engineers worked feverishly...

New Apple TV →
A couple of observations I have related to today’s Apple TV announcement: It has the new A4 processor, which will help with better processing, and HD video support.  It is NOT iOS based (like iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch), and keeps the same general menu structure as the current version, with some minor enhancements.  The current Apple TV version 3.0.2 is built on top of Mac OS 10.4.7...

Facebook Granted Patent on the News Feed - This... →
The reason I think the newsfeed is so popular?  People are so overwhelmed with information now, they just want to be informed of the latest and greatest, no emails sitting unread that you have to click on one by one, just a constant stream of “I can reply if I’m interested, otherwise, no big deal.”  I wish my corporate email inbox worked that way.  May be a good idea for...

A conversation I have every month or so
dwineman: Me: (tries to visit a local restaurant’s website via iPhone) Restaurant website: I require Flash. Fuck off. Me: I just want to know how late you’re open. Website: Nope. Me: But I’m on my phone. Don’t you have a little “HTML Version” link up in the corner or something? Website: I’m ignoring you. Me: What if I’m on my phone because I’m out, looking for a place to eat? Didn’t that ever...

American Idol
I have to admit, I’m an American Idol junkie.  Not just the episodes that are funny because people suck so bad, but also the ones that are on now, where you see some talented people start to shine.  A couple of these people start singing and I literally get goosebumps.  I love seeing the true artist come out in people you’ve never heard or seen before.
